Teaching

Sun Nov 9, 2008, 4:57 AM
"Do you like kids?" my advisor asked.

"Yes," I answered.

"Do you want to work with kids, because if you don't, then you may want to reconsider this," she said.

"Yes," I answered again.

In my head I was thinking, "LIKE kids? More like LOVE kids. More like, I'd probably die if I couldn't have children, I cry when I see babies, my heart flurries when I get to play with children, and so much more."

I'm starting art education next semester. I'm going to be helping out in classrooms and come next year, I'll be a teacher assistant in a middle school and then I'll actually be teaching classes at the high school level. I think it's one of the best decisions I've made recently and I think the experience will be rewarding. I can't believe how good I feel about this. I'm so excited!

Before adding art education, I was a drawing/painting BFA with a minor in English. Painting just hasn't been agreeing with me this semester, but I know I could never live without drawing which is why I've kept that concentration. Painting can be something I do on the side. As for English, I've always loved it, but more in the, "I like reading and writing for fun" sense.

I have to take a couple summer classes, and as of now my expected graduation date is December 2010 instead of May because of student teaching. However, I think it'll be worth it.

I want to have a variety of tools and skills for my imaginary toolbox. I'll be taking a variety of classes and I'll have art education and drawing as a great starting point or something to fall back on.

One reason I originally didn't consider art education was because I felt that it wouldn't allow me to be creative. I can still be creative in my own work and I can be creative with solutions in the classroom.

In other news, I have been asked to do sketches/illustrations for a book, "Piccolo, the Gray Robe." As soon as I finish the book, I'll start the illustrations. It'll be a fun project and a good experience.

  • Mood: Longing
  • Reading: Piccolo, the Gray Robe
  • Eating: popcorn
  • Drinking: Coca-Cola

Wow! That's awesome! Good for you! College just started today so I didn't have to go to all my classes. I'm taking some art education classes, drawing, studio and art history. I think it'll be a pretty good semester (and not as busy) so I'm pretty excited about that!
that sounds like a good time, so what are you going to do after college teach art? or are you going to become a starving artist? lol
I guess the current plan is to teach art. I figure that way I can work, but still do my own artwork on the side. I think it might be a good starting point if I eventually want to do something else. That or I might find a job elsewhere and I can always fall back on teaching. A teaching job would be nice too because teachers are needed in every state are in demand currently. We'll see!
Hey how's school. I miss chating with you.
School's going well. I'm keeping rather busy with classes M-R 9-5pm and swing dancing. I'm gonna try out for the swing team come next semester, which means I really have to practice hard this semester. Painting is getting a little stressful (already) but I just need to try and stay positive. Oh well. Tomorrow I'm going to visit a physical therapist in regards to my neck/back. I had gone to a chiro and gotten x-rays... Instead of having a natural curve to my neck, it's just a diagonal line! Yikes! I'm going to see the PT for a second opinion (and it's less expensive/more convenient if they can help me out).

Apartment life is awesome. I love fending for myself and having my own room. My roomies are great too! Woot. That's about it. How 'bout you, dear cuz?
& thank you lots for the fave!!
